“What if I say the wrong thing? It’s so heavy. I’m nervous. I feel so uncomfortable… awkward.”
Isn’t it funny how we feel we need to break the ice with a smile, change things up, relieve the awkwardness. Ever felt that way about grief?
“What if I say the wrong thing? It’s so heavy. I’m nervous. I feel so uncomfortable… awkward.”
Yep! I know it’s hard to admit it, but most of those feelings are about you. It’s an awkward, uncomfortable situation that you don’t know what to do with. You feel unprepared and unequipped. You prefer normal and happy.
Yeah, we can justify it. I’ve done it too (during some really important times).
🙋🏽 <—— I’m guilty too!
But, honestly, too often, we make it about us and our comfort level.
And, this is why I’m including a lively picture here… to make 👉🏾YOU 👈🏾feel better.😊
So often, this is what the grieving do. They, too, make it about YOU.
They smile because that’s what YOU want. You think “happy” means okay. You think a smile symbolizes better. And, when they’re okay, the weirdness goes away. Right? — At least for one of 👉🏾YOU👈🏾.
The other’s left like they’re living a big, fat, awkward, uncomfortable lie; like there are two versions of themselves.🎭 (It’s a pretty strange feeling.)
Instead, when you’re with a friend who’s lost a child within the past few years, it’s okay to whisper, “I know there are parts of you, maybe many parts, that still feel pain.” I just wanted you to know that I acknowledge your pain, I know it’s there, and it’s perfectly okay for it to be there. I love you with your pain and all!😘
Then, take a selfie of the two of you smiling TOGETHER {{Cheese! 😁}}, making the world a less awkward place (on both sides of grief). 📸😊
